Every activity with hazardous substances involves risks. Calculation methods have been prescribed to better visualise the risks of these activities for the environment. RIVM develops and manages these calculation methods in collaboration with various parties. Each calculation method consists of a calculation model in the form of a software program and a manual that describes how the risks should be calculated. The aim is to ensure that the calculation methods are in line with the latest scientific insights. The knowledge is obtained through literature, participation in national and international knowledge meetings and through the national and international network of RIVM.

Various calculation models are currently in use for facilities (Safeti-NL), transport (RBMII) and pipelines (Safeti-NL and CAROLA). This means that comparable situations can lead to slightly different calculation results, so a study has been started into the possibilities of updating and harmonising the calculation models in the longer term.
