COVID-19 vaccination resident nursing home 18 January 2021

The number of infections among nursing home residents is decreasing in the Netherlands. On the other hand, infections among older people living at home have been on the rise again since last week. The continued significant decrease among nursing home residents indicates that vaccination is having a beneficial effect against the coronavirus.

Vaccination in nursing homes started in week 3 of this year. All the first doses of the vaccines have been administered and administration of the second doses has now started. Starting in late March, all nursing home residents who were not vaccinated in the first round, for example due to illness, will be offered a vaccine again. Once this happens, vaccination of this target group will be completed.

Figure 1 shows that the number of infections among nursing home residents continued to decrease in week 7 (15-21 February), while the number of infections among people aged 60 and over living at home increased again in almost all age groups (except for the group aged 85-89 years).  If no distinction is made according to living situation, it appears that the number of infections continued to decline last week in the groups aged 85 years and up (Figure 2).

People aged 80 and up

Vaccination of people aged 85 and up living at home started in week 4 of this year, while vaccination of people aged 80 and up living at home started in week 5. By 21 February, at least one dose had been given to 57% of people over 90, and to 61% of the group aged 85-89. Many people in these age groups still have an appointment scheduled to get their first COVID-19 vaccination. More information about the number of vaccines that have been administered can be found here. Or read the news item: First figures on vaccination coverage available. Depending on vaccination coverage, the impact of the vaccination can be expected two to three weeks after the first jab at the earliest.
