Abstract

This report gives an overview of the mayor environmental issues of the dairy industry in the Netherlands and the main technological developments that can help decreasing these emissions. The study is worked out according to a method developed by the RIVM in 1992. The main goal of this approach is to gain information for a research programme concerning the dairy industry for the 'Regulations on the Advancement of Environmental Technology'. For the dairy industry nine environmental problems are described. Based on literature and intervieuws with experts within this branche, 17 (clusters of) technological solutions with high environmental potential are worked out. Information about environmental aspects, expected developments and technological and economical bottlenecks of each technology made it possible to direct priorities in research. 11 of these (clusters of) technologies need more development in the dairy industry.
