In order to gain a better understanding of why pneumonia occurs more often in people living in proximity to goat farms, we will not only be studying pneumonia patients. In addition, we will be taking health measurements among local residents who do not have pneumonia. This allows us to look at the differences in pathogens between people who have pneumonia and people who do not. In addition, we will be able to see whether certain pathogens are associated with residential proximity to goat farms. 

Research method

For this sub-study, the researchers will be taking health measurements among persons who do not have pneumonia and who live in the study area. The researchers will visit each participant to take blood samples and samples of mucus from the nose and throat. The study participants will also fill out a questionnaire about their health, living situation and other topics. The mucus samples will be used to detect the presence of various bacteria and viruses in the nose and throat. The blood samples will be tested for the presence of antibodies against certain bacteria, known as ‘thermophilic bacteria’, and other possible causes of pneumonia. 

Schedule

Health measurements among local residents who do not have pneumonia have not started yet due to the nationwide restrictions currently in effect in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation permits such activities, these health measurements will start. 

Who can take part in this sub-study?

Only people living in the study area who are invited for this follow-up study can take part. These people will automatically receive an invitation package by post. People who are not invited cannot take part in this follow-up study.
