Abstract

The total effective dose to the Dutch population due to medical radiation was based on in part obsolete data for the last years. For that reason RIVM has adapted the questionnaire for the medical organizations by which these data are collected. The adjustments have already been made for the questionnaire on 2008 which will be available early 2009. The adjustments arise from guidance, issued by a European working group in which RIVM also participated. Based on the recommendations, RIVM has draw up a long-term schedule for the collection of data.
The largest part of the radiation-exposure of the Dutch population from artificial sources is caused by medical procedures such as CT-scans, X-ray examinations and nuclear medicine. EU-member states are obliged to assess the radiation-dose from these medical exposures. For this reason the Netherlands have set up the 'Informatiesysteem Medische Stralingstoepassingen' (information system medical radiation applications), www.rivm.nl/ims. Besides the better estimation of the radiation exposure, the new schedule makes it easier to compare the data with other EU-Member States.
