Anyone undergoing hospital treatment or living in a residential care facility is at some risk of acquiring a care-related infection.
In the Netherlands, approximately 6% of patients are affected by some form of care-related infection, such as septicaemia following catheterization, pneumonia following artificial respiration or postoperative wound infections. These complications cause additional patient discomfort and distress, and increase the overall costs of health care. By collecting, collating, analysing and interpreting data about care-related infections, it becomes possible to devise appropriate countermeasures.
