Abstract

Many (hospital) laboratories send their patient materials to RIVM's Centre for Infectious Diseases Research, Diagnostics and Screening (IDS) for testing, particularly if special diagnostic procedures are required for which these laboratories lack the necessary testing facilities. Patient materials are also sent to IDS in order to monitor the incidence of specific pathogenic micro-organisms. The results obtained enable RIVM to keep track of where and how frequently these micro-organisms occur, facilitating a rapid response to any (sudden) development in the incidence of infectious diseases.

The results of these activities are summarized in an Annual Report to provide stakeholders with insight into infectious diseases research, diagnostics and screening. The IDS Annual Report 2014 includes the initial monitoring results for the vaccination campaign to prevent Human Papillomavirus (HPV): the incidence of HPV in the target group appears to have decreased, and the participation rate has risen. The Centre also investigated the lack of efficacy of the currently used whooping cough vaccine. IDS supports the health authorities on the Caribbean islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba in diagnosing infections caused by the Chikungunya virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Since the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in October 2010, these islands have enjoyed the status of 'special municipality' or 'public body' within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Research at IDS is mainly focused on the development and optimization of innovative laboratory tests that can help to improve public health.
